A Director's Treatment: What to Include and What to Cut
Structure a director's treatment around a clear idea, visual references, performance, camera language and an achievable approach to production.

A director's treatment explains how you would turn a brief or script into a specific film. It is a persuasive creative document, but it should also demonstrate that you understand the assignment. The strongest starting point is an interpretation: what is the film really asking the audience to notice, feel or remember?
Open with a position
Use the first page to state your approach in plain language. For a travel brand, “We follow the moments between destinations” says more than “An elevated, authentic cinematic journey.” The former suggests behavior, pacing and subject matter. The latter could describe hundreds of unrelated films.
Follow the idea with a short description of the film's progression. Explain how the opening earns attention, how the middle develops the premise and what the ending leaves behind. You do not need to repeat a supplied script line by line.
Organize the visual argument
Build sections for camera, light, art direction, casting, performance and editing only where those subjects need discussion. Pair references with annotations that explain what you are borrowing. A reference might communicate unpolished performance but have entirely the wrong wardrobe; say so.
Keep image captions close to the images. Readers often skim a treatment out of order. Each spread should communicate one decision without requiring someone to remember a paragraph five pages earlier.
Show that the approach can be made
Describe the practical method behind your boldest image. If the film depends on a continuous move through three spaces, explain whether those spaces connect, whether there is a hidden transition, or whether the move is a concept that needs testing. Distinguish settled decisions from possibilities.
A short production note can address weather, working with non-actors or balancing product visibility with natural action. Avoid pretending to have solved constraints that have not been discussed with the producer.
Cut generic promises
Delete sentences that could be pasted into another director's document unchanged. Replace “beautiful lighting” with an observable choice: “late afternoon side light, with the interior allowed to fall darker behind the subject.” Replace “dynamic edit” with the rhythm and motivation of the cuts.
Before sending, read only the headings and image captions. They should form a coherent argument. Then check names, brand spelling, reference credits and links. A treatment earns confidence when the creative idea and the care of its presentation support each other.
