Practical Lights in Cinematography: More Than Background Decor
Use lamps, signs and other practical lights to create depth, motivate illumination and support a scene without distracting highlights or flicker.

A practical is a light source that appears in the frame: a bedside lamp, pendant, illuminated sign or string of bulbs. Practicals can establish a believable environment and create points of brightness at different distances. They are most effective when they belong to the story, rather than being added only to make a background sparkle.
Decide what the practical contributes
Give the source a clear role. A desk lamp can explain why one side of a face is warm. A corridor fixture can guide the eye toward an exit. A row of distant lights can reveal the depth of an otherwise dark room.
Place the practical relative to the composition, then check it from the actual camera height. A lamp that looks well positioned in the room may overlap a face or create a bright distraction in the frame.
Balance the visible source and the subject
Expose for the important subject, then assess the practical. If a shade becomes a featureless white patch, try reducing its output or changing the bulb while respecting the fixture's rating. Sometimes a small bright core is appropriate; sometimes the shade texture is essential to the design.
Do not assume the practical will provide enough useful light on the performer. A separate source can extend its direction and color. Compare the two on skin and neutral objects, because bulbs with similar stated color temperatures can still render materials differently.
Test flicker at the recording settings
Record with the intended frame rate and shutter setting. LEDs, dimmers and signs can behave differently from what your eyes perceive. Review footage carefully, especially if you plan slow motion. Test the actual fixture and dimmer combination rather than relying on a product label alone.
If a source causes problems, involve the appropriate lighting crew member in selecting a compatible replacement or control method. Keep heat, cable routes and secure placement in mind when integrating a lamp into a set.
Preserve continuity
Photograph the practical's position and record the bulb, output setting and shade orientation. A rotated shade or changed dimmer can alter a background noticeably between angles.
During the final frame check, briefly look away from the subject. If the practical is the first thing that attracts your eye every time, either that is the intended hierarchy or it needs adjustment. The brightest object should earn its prominence.
